Anna T. Jeanes School Preservation Project

fairhope’s Anna T. Jeanes School preservation project underway

I’m very proud and grateful to have been asked to represent the Hope Community (501c3) as the Chair of Community Outreach on our interview with Fox 10 News Mobile along with the President of Hope Community, Shawn Graham.

I originally had been told about The Hope Community by my friend Holly because of their plans for a teaching farm. I thought I’d get out and work in the dirt and grow vegetables with our neighbors, but it has become so much more to me than that.

This project is about the beautiful history of this property and this neighborhood and restoring it to its original purpose; farming and education in the predominantly African American neighborhood rich with a very unique history in Baldwin County that we need to preserve and tell. Our mission to bring health, teach wellness through food, growing and cooking. A community center for everyone.

If you are curious to listen to the interview, keep reading and watch the interview. If you want to learn more, come by my shop at the Battles Wharf Market and I’d love to talk to you!!

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A project to preserve the historic Anna T. Jeanes School for African American children in Fairhope is underway.

The school is one of 14 schools built from an endowment from its namesake. Jeanes, a Philadelphia-native, wanted to give African American children in the southern states access to education.

Now, the owner of the Fairhope Juice Company is working with the non-profit Hope Community on a project to preserve the school. It would be reimagined as both an arts and cultural center, and as a teaching farm and kitchen.

Lorie Ward with Fairhope Juice Company and Shawn Graham with Hope Community sat down with FOX10′s Lenise Ligon to talk about their plans and how you can get involved.
